WASHINGTON -- Sen. Edward Kennedy was rushed to the hospital Tuesday
after collapsing during a congressional lunch to honor newly sworn-in
President Barack Obama, though the Massachusetts Democrat remained
conscious after suffering a seizure.

Mr. Kennedy, first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1962, was diagnosed
with a malignant brain tumor in May 2008 and has been undergoing
treatment. He hoped to return to a full schedule this year to play a
lead role in shaping legislation to overhaul the nation's health-care
system. The 76-year-old senator attended Mr. Obama's inauguration
earlier Tuesday, and appeared in good spirits just before falling ill.

The incident injected a moment of solemnity into a celebration of the
changing of the guard in the nation's capital.

"Ted was telling old war stories," said former Vice President Walter
Mondale, who was sitting with Mr. Kennedy during the lunch. "He was
obviously under stress. Everybody was sobered."

and other congressional leaders. Video courtesy of Fox News.

Mr. Kennedy was taken by ambulance to the Washington Hospital Center.
Several lawmakers said he remained conscious as he was whisked from
the traditional inaugural luncheon, which has been hosted by
congressional leaders for more than 100 years.

Dr. Edward Aulisi of Washington Hospital confirmed the senator
suffered a seizure "brought on by simple fatigue." He was expected to
remain hospitalized overnight for observation.

Mr. Obama rushed to Mr. Kennedy's side when he fell ill, and stood
with him until he was taken in a wheelchair from the lunch in
Statuary Hall. "He went over there immediately," said Sen. Jay
Rockefeller (D., W.Va.).

Mr. Kennedy's endorsement of Mr. Obama was a turning point in the
2008 presidential campaign, strengthening the Illinois senator's
credibility among donors, voters and the party establishment at a
time when New York Sen. Hillary Clinton was seen as the front-runner
in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

After Sen. Kennedy's departure, those attending the lunch held a
moment of silence. In remarks later, Mr. Obama suggested Mr. Kennedy
was on his mind. "I would be lying to you if I did not say that,
right now, a part of me is with him," he said. "And I think that's
true for all of us."

Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah said he was by Mr. Kennedy's side
as he was wheeled in to an ambulance, and that the Massachusetts
Democrat was conscious and gave him "that old Irish grin."

There were reports Tuesday that Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd had also
collapsed at the luncheon, but a spokesman said the 91-year-old West
Virginian is fine. Mr. Byrd was seated next to Mr. Kennedy, which may
have caused the confusion.
