A Delano mother wrote a letter to 17 News when
she discovered her unborn child suffers from a
rare disorder. The woman says she became
desperate for help after her insurance provider
denied her baby a procedure it needs to survive.

“I've put it in God's hands because that's all I
can do at this point. I feel like I did all I could do,” Kema Welton said.

Welton also says she and her family have spent
weeks fighting for her unborn baby's life. Last
month, the 23-year-old mother learned the child
growing inside her suffers from posterior
urethral valve syndrome, which blocks the baby's
bladder and could damage the baby's kidneys.

Welton says her doctor told her the black circles
in her baby’s ultrasound pictures show where the
abnormality is growing. But her doctor also said
there is cure and a procedure could save her baby.

“He said what he was going to… there is a doctor
in LA that he was going to refer me to that has
worked on procedures like this before. And that
he would try and do the best to get me in there
but first he had to clear it with my insurance,” Welton said.

But when her doctor contacted Welton's insurance
provider, Kern Family Health Care, they denied
her claim and told Welton it would not cover the
procedure because it is experimental. So in a
desperate search for help, the Delano mother
began writing letters to local politicians and
the media. 17News began calling Kern Family
Health Care on Tuesday and about two hours later
a representative called Welton and said her claim
was approved. Now the young mother hopes it’s not
too late for the care her baby needs.

“I’m nervous and I’m scared because at this point
there is still a possibility that it could be too
late. That there could be multiple things wrong,” Welton said.

Welton and her family drove to Los Angeles to see
a specialist on Wednesday. It's hope for a Delano
mother who did all she could to fight for her unborn baby's life.

Kern Family Health Care would not discuss
Welton's case with 17News any further. But they
did tell us that law requires them to respond to
urgent referrals within 72 hours. They say they
were still investigating her referral, but could
not explain why the mother-to-be wasn't told.

They also released this statement saying “due to
State and Federal confidentiality laws, Kern
Family Health Care can not respond other than to
say we provide our members the benefits they are
entitled to through the State of California.”
