Chapter One. The Imitation of Christ

What good does it do to speak learnedly about the Trinity if, lacking
humility, you displease the Trinity? Indeed it is not learning that
makes a man holy and just, but a virtuous life makes him pleasing to
God. I would rather feel contrition than know how to define it. For
what would it profit us to know the whole Bible by heart and the
principles of all the philosophers if we live without grace and the
love of God? Vanity of vanities and all is vanity, except to love God
and serve Him alone.

Learning has a very valid place in our lives, God gave us an
intellect to use for his glory, unfortunately we so often misuse
it, if knowledge is not put at the service of others that others may
also reap the benefit it is useless, this applies not only to
religion but every other subject too.

It is a sad state of things to meet persons for whom knowledge is
power and self aggrandizement, knowledge is certainly not faith, it
can lead and enhance faith, but it is not faith. There are people who
can quote every verse in the Bible, enumerating every line and
chapter, but who are totally unable or unwilling to put God's word
into practise.

A humble receptive heart is what we need, conscious of our need of
God and His grace, it is in loving that He will reveal His secrets.

Does not scripture say, Mary kept all these things in her heart ( not
in her head! )

Lovingly, all your Sisters
