29 January 2009 - Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India
The Times of India is reporting that the father
of three intellectually disabled sons is
appealing to the distrcit administration for the
mercy killing of the three boys.

As reported by the

of India:

Bheem Sen Kushwaha, who is a farmer in Kanakpur
village, has submitted an application for the
mercy killing of his teenage sons to the district
administration. Kannauj is about 250 km from Lucknow.

“In his application, Kushwaha has stated that he
has already exhausted all of his resources in
trying to meet the medical expenses of his three
mentally challenged sons… so he wants them to be
killed,” a revenue official said on phone.

Kannauj District Magistrate S.V.S. Rangarao said:
“We will try our best to provide the necessary
treatment to Kushwaha’s sons. For this, we have
also initiated talks with members of various NGOs.”

Clearly, the conditions that brought this family
to this desperate situation need attention, but
it is equally clear that such an act can neither t be endorsed or permitted.

The timing of this may not be random. Kerala has
recently received a report from its Law Reforms
Commission recommending the that mercy killing be
allowed. If enacted, Kerala would become the
first state in India to permit some form of
euthansia. The debate in Kerala may have prompted
the request at this time, and the response to the
current request may influence the debate in
Kerala. Kerala is predominately Hindu, but also
includes an approximately 25% Islamic and 20% Christian population.
