Appendix B
of the Charter of the Temple
of the Sisters of St. John the Beloved.

The Little Charter of the poor

“The Little Charter of the Poor”
for the guidance of the members of
The Confraternity of the servants of Jesus in Mary

1. The Confraternity of the servants of Jesus in
Mary is a group of lay associates and friends
affiliated to The Sisters of St. John the Beloved
at the Monastery of Dewi Sant.

From the beginning there have been those who
wished to be known as friends of the Monastery or
associate themselves with us in a special way, so
in the fraternal love of charity for these souls
so dear to God, we have desired to set down in
writing this grant of rights and privileges.

Recognizing the Father working through Christ his
Son, we consider it a great and holy privilege to
receive the love that is the Holy Spirit in each
one, and to tend with caring love, through our
silence which is more fruitful than any word we
might speak, this, God’s monastery garden.

God has shown us great mercy and the love of His
Sacred Heart by allowing us to live in His House,
we desire to share with you His merciful love as
we ourselves have received it. Through the
intercession of St. David of Wales, (Dewi Sant),
we commend you, dear brothers and sisters in
Christ to Almighty God working through His
beloved Son in this monastic family. May you be
lifted up on eagles’ wings through the
intercession of St. John the Beloved Disciple and
may you be offered up to the Most Holy Trinity in
the Eucharistic Heart of our Lord God and
Redeemer, from the hands of Mary, in the supreme homage of adoration.

2. “The Little Charter of the poor” represents
the basis of our relationship together. This
relationship is spiritual. All need to be aware
of those things that bind us together in the love of Christ Jesus.

Everyone should make every effort to grow in
understanding of our intention and meaning by
studying the Little Charter and by seeking out
the rich store of wisdom that the monastic
tradition brings to us. They will then be able to
make a true declaration, both individually and
collectively, of their faith and calling to this
house and come, through experience, to realize, a
sense of our humanity shared with others.

The liberating discovery that the difficulties
and troubles and trials of this life, in fact, do
not separate us from mankind but link us with the
rest of humanity and that the values we live, by
our way of life in society, bring a perennial
stability and continuity to the most important
values that any society can have.

3. This confraternity is to be a ‘House of God’,
a house of prayer for all peoples. A place of
meeting and fellowship that welcomes the
passerby; makes a quiet room for those who wish
to rest a while, meditate, peruse a book on the spiritual life or pray.

A house of authentic witness to the monastic life
with a deep respect for the dignity and
uniqueness of every person; with a profound
awareness of the sense and meaning of life and a
common mentality that affects the way we live and view the world.

4. Dedicated to the adoration of the Most Holy
and Precious Blood that flowed from the Saviour’s
Heart, with a tender devotion to Mary, Mother of
God and Our Lady of Joy, all live in the shadow
of the Monastery wall sharing in the charism and spiritual outlook.

5. Members are to live a good Christian and
apostolic life unto the shadow of the Tabernacle
where Jesus likes to see only souls who love Him.

6. Together, we live this moment that contains
within itself our future. Together, we serve God,
mankind and each other. United in the Blood of
Christ, everyone is consecrated to Mary.

A family of loving friendship and support in Christ Jesus surrounds us.

7. May the Lord continue to draw you to Himself and lead you by his Spirit.

8. The confraternity is looked after by the
Sisters of St. John the Beloved under the
direction of Rev. Mother. They are responsible
for all the day-to-day business that arises.
Members are to direct all requests, queries,
donations and business matters direct to the Sisters.

Membership

9. There are no special requirements for
enrollment other than to have an appreciation of
the existence of the Monastery and our way of
life. We serve God and we serve each other
through our lives of silent prayer and solitude.

Prayer is the essence of our life because we have
only one purpose – to seek God and God alone. No
one will be refused entry. All requests for
enrollment in the Confraternity should be directed to the Monastery.

Membership will be effected at the time of Rev.
Mother’s approval and enrollment in the Register of servants of Jesus in Mary.

Enrolled members are entitled to a share in the
merits and good works of the monastery, to our
prayer for their well-being, for their welfare
and good of soul in this life, at the time of
their death and for their eternal rest.

10. Formation is available to members who wish to
progress in the spiritual life and who desire
union with God above all other things. They may,
in due course become Oblates of the Precious
Blood and members of the Chapter of St. John the Baptist.

Obligations

11. God has called to you and with a great love
of Jesus in Mary you have responded to his call
voluntarily, freely accepting to become a servant of Jesus in Mary.

We ask only that you unite yourself to the most
divine life of Jesus by imitating it to the best
of your ability, so as to enter into a real
communion with God and his divine mysteries and
that you support your monastery by your prayer
and good works and also financially as you are
able because this charitable act of almsgiving
helps us to continue our work and keep the outreach programs up and running.

To help you in your spiritual life we recommend
to all members the following practices for which
you may obtain guidance from the monastery.

Recommended Practices

12. We recommend the following practices to all:

(a) To renew your consecration to Mary and your
baptismal vows every morning upon waking, placing
your whole life in her hands to offer with her
Son, Jesus the Christ, in the supreme homage of
adoration to the Most Holy Trinity.

(b) To ask Mary to mother you, as she mothered
Jesus at Nazareth. Remember that Mary’s whole
purpose is to lead you straight into her Son’s
Sacred Heart. Draw inspiration from Mary’s life
with Jesus and promote devotion to the Sacred Heart.

(c) Pray the psalms daily and if you are able,
pray at least a part of the Divine Office every day.

(d) Join your intentions to ours.

(e) Commit yourself to the Mission of Holy Church
and live your life according to the teachings of the Church.

(f) Spend 15-30 minutes daily, or as is possible
for you, in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

(g) Learn to spend time in Lectio Divina. Read
Holy Scripture for at least 5 minutes everyday,
treating the Bible with the reverence and respect
that is due to sacred things.

The Fraternity strives to be

13. (a) A union of souls, a community of mutual
support and a place of spiritual renewal and
refreshment for the broken body; a place where
the search for God is a source of commitment and self- fulfillment.

(b) A movement where the Spirit of God is at work
in his world of people, coming into the world in
smallness and meekness, just like the first Christmas.

(c) Through the establishment of local
fraternities, our lay brothers and sisters can
become small families of love and goodness,
living a life of prayer that overflows in divine
charity, serving the poorest of the poor in their neighbourhood.

(d) A place of Christian fellowship, for all to
be welcomed and listened to; for Christ to be
served in others, reaching beyond the boundaries
of geographical, social and family origins.

(e) A place where friendship and love, some
laughter and some joy is given and received, and
the immediate need met. (f) A place where the
circumstances that have made them what they are,
can be recognized and to share, at least
implicitly, their confidence that we will always be here for them.

(g) A place where God is welcomed, received and
accepted. joyfully and thankfully.

(h) A place of learning, hospitality and charity.

(i) A place from which to go forth, out into our world.

(j) A place where the Spirit yields a harvest of
love, joy, peace, patience,kindness, forbearance,
gentleness, faith, courage,. temperateness,
purity. Since we live by the Spirit, let the Spirit be our rule of life.

All things come from Him;
To Him are all things.

Our humble and silent prayer joins yours.

Let no one prefer anything to Christ,
And may the Good God bring us all together unto life everlasting.

May the Lord bless you. Amen.

Behold, how the Lord in His love shows us the way of life.
