I remember, years ago, visiting the apartment of a woman who taught school with my mom. She was an art teacher and very creative. She had invited us, mom and me, for dinner. Upon arriving there, I was struck by the utter feelings of desolation I had in looking around her living area. It was minimalist in style, but not the art nouveau type minimalist. This was a space that was unloved, although certainly not untidy. I asked her why she hadn't made her apartment beautiful and welcoming - for herself. She explained that for her, traveling was more important, and that was where her money was spent.
I don't remember any traveling stories she may have relayed in the years she frequently visited us, but I remember that lonely apartment. I tend to fall on the opposite side of that spectrum. I am what some refer to as a "nester." My dwelling is very important to me, and having it be a place where all feel welcome and can distinctly encounter God's presence is of utmost importance. And, so, as you may imagine, across the years, my discretionary income has gone to creating an atmosphere that is soothing, and welcoming, and impresses upon the visitor that God's love is all around them. For me, as I gaze upon any of the pictures on each wall, it is as if I am looking at them for the first time - each day. In fact, framing beautiful images is one of my very favorite things to do.
