(BTW, she is in first grade) ... It was shocking to me...<http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iQJl87NOk58/SaLShMhgMiI/AAAAAAAAAgE/VimcIMJFxwQ/s1600-h/Mona-Lisa_shocked_web.gif> [] they were setting up a meeting with the administration, AND scheduling a social worker to come to our house because Mary had 3 consecutive absences that were apparently unexcused. She also has had 2 other absences this year... a total of 5, not bad when you consider all the ooey gooey noses in that place. Well I contacted the school each time and on the 3 in a row ... strep throat... I also called the teacher and picked up all missed work which Mary did it at home... while sick. She is a bright girl, way ahead in school, and can even read well beyond her years... so the absences did not hurt her school record. Here is the letter, and the 'names' have been changed to protect the innocent: Dear Mr. VP-with-too-much-time-on-your-hands, We will not be attending the meeting you scheduled, without consulting us, on February 24, 2009. We do not need support from the school social worker either. It seems a waste of time and resources that could be better spent. To quote you Mr. VP-with-too-much-time-on-your-hands, "we have not heard from you regarding these absences." The school, was informed that Mary was out due to illness each time. The three days in a row that you spoke of were due to strep throat, of which I called the school, once, and informed her teacher. (Please note that there is a notation at the bottom of your letter that reads "Letter # 2." This is printed on both letters you have sent and this is the first letter we have received.) We have noted that "written verification" must be provided, is this as well as calling the school? We have been with the school system since 1992, and this was not always the policy. We can comply but it seems redundant to send in notes and call the school. It seems a shame that a parents decision to keep a child home would be considered so inconsequential. Certainly you would have to agree that our judgment in matters of Mary's well being far exceeds yours. Perhaps a policy could be developed that would call forth a meeting with parents that send their sick kids to school without regard to the health of the other students and teachers. This might insure that many more students did not miss school. Could we suggest that in the future if you feel that our student's absences are of grave concern, that you call our home. This would save some time, paper, trees, etc. One last thing. I love The School. I, Judy, attended this school. Several of our Children have attended The School. My mother taught at this school years ago. It has been a big part or our lives, so it is hurtful to get a letter such as this. This letter is offensive and most certainly impersonal. It is offensive because you have made an assumption with regard to our ability to care for our child. It is impersonal because it is written to the parent/guardian and not directly to us. Perhaps you are dealing with so many delinquent children at the school that you can not afford the time for phone calls, if that is the case then that is a shame. Thank you for your time.
