Best candles in an emergency?

Beeswax Candles

How hard can getting the right emergency candle be? Well, candles
have grown into their own specialties, especially emergency candles.

And candles, like water or salt, can be blessed by a priest for
sacramental purposes. Nothing like having a blessed candle lighting
your way in an emergency!

For frugal readers who just want to head to a Walmart and buy a pack
of candles, I'd suggest continuing to read on, because I found out
that the cheapest candles are not necessarily the best value.

Beeswax Candles

Beeswax candles seem to be the standard by which everything else is
measured. Sweet smelling, natural and long burning, these candles
are popular among many people. Especially Catholics.

One thing I didn't know is that
<http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01347a.htm>altar candles must
contain at least 51% beeswax, per Vatican II instructions. They're
also limited as to what additives can be in the other 49%.

And I know from a Catholic prophecy magazine editor
(<http://www.sign.org>Signs and Wonders) that many Catholic
prophesies concerning chastisements or days of darkness usually call
for people to have beeswax candles blessed by clergy and put away until needed.

Paraffin candles

Paraffin wax candles are usually made from crude oil and are an
industrial product. If you buy a candle that's not labeled as
beeswax or something else, chances are you're buying a paraffin candle.

Paraffin candles aren't eligible for altar candles, but they can be
blessed. They're also reliable light sources, though burn faster than beeswax.

Soy candles

Soy candles are the latest rage among tree-huggers (my apologies to
any tree-huggers in the audience, I guess I should use the word
environmentalists).
:)

Many claims are made about soy, cleaner burning, no soot, etc. But
I'd be skeptical about those. Anything that burns puts off carbon,
and I've always been told the length and condition of the wick
usually determines how much soot is put off.

Soy wax is softer and will usually need to be in a container. I have
read that they do burn longer than paraffin waxes. I haven't included
any soy candles in the cost table below, mainly because of their softness.

Candle hoods, lanterns, oil lanterns, etc.

Candle hoods or lanterns like

whole bunch of candle lantern products.

And if you're a do-it-yourselfer, I found this really interesting
"how-to" for making an

candle set out of an Altoids can.

For oil lantern enthusiasts, I'll be covering that topic in a later
posting. I'm a big fan of kerosene lamps if you've got the space to
put away the oil.

The lineup

Below is the lineup of candidates I found. You'll find descriptions
of the candles, burn times, cost per hour of burning, etc. Costs
include shipping for one candle, although I priced each one in a
3-candle order, so depending on how many you would order, your
shipping might be higher or lower.
