Hi: Our daughter, Christine, is having ear surgery this Friday (March 27) at Loma Linda Hospital. (She is turning 19 years old tomorrow.) The procedure is called "Left Tympanoplasty with Mastoidectomy" and is being done by an ear specialist (Dr. Stewart) who told us the operation is 99% successful. She needs her left ear drum completely rebuilt and the ear bone drilled into to remove any infection. She had tubes put in both ears as a baby but over the years she still had chronic ear infections which gradually caused unseen and subtle damage. Even after countless doctor appointments and antibiotics healing the ear infections, it all has taken a toll on her hearing and she basically has no functioning eardrum left in that ear. Dr. Stewart will cut into the back of her ear and move it forward to get to the inner ear. He will use some ear muscle to build the new eardrum and will also drill out any infection in the ear bone. Of course, he had to tell us all the possible risks. The operation itself will take 2 to 2 1/2 hours because it's a delicate operation and he has to be extremely careful of the facial nerves, etc. One of the major risks is that she could wake from the operation with one side of her face paralyzed and drooping like she had a stroke and he told us there is nothing they could do to fix it. We've been told that Dr. Stewart specializes in these operations. He says that 6 months after this operation Christine should have normal hearing back in that ear. We have to have her at the hospital 7 a.m Friday to meet with the anesthesiologist first. Please keep her in your prayers and also, for Dr. Stewart. Thank you all so very, very much!
