video located at hyperlink above WNCN Published: April 1, 2009 Joyce and Jim Willis were loyal customers at Apex, North Carolina's Schlotzsky's Deli until they found out the restaurant was in trouble. "The manager told us that the business was going under and all the employees would have to look for other jobs," Joyce Willis recounted. The Willis' are in their 70s and have no experience running a restaurant, but they say after praying about it they decided to buy the business to save the workers from unemployment. "They put the customers and employees first. They rather us be happy than them," sandwich maker Joshua Reale said. The first thing the Willis' did was give the employees raises, something they haven't had in four years. They also plan to give their workers some of the profits left over at the end of the year, taking nothing for themselves. "My goal if I live long enough is to pay my employees the highest we could, over any other restaurant," Willis said. The pair is also helping manager Randy Ellis make his dream come true by handing over the business to him in about five years. Ellis said he could not do it on his own. "They're helping me out in such a way you can't believe, to help support my family and so something I've always wanted to do," Ellis said. Mrs. Willis said she not only wants to support her employees financially, but she also wants to make the deli more than just a workplace. "That's what it's all about working as a happy family and when you take care of workers they will take care of you," Willis said. Employees agree that kind of loyalty is rare, but they hope it will make the business a success.
