NOVENA TO ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA JUNE 4 - 12

FEAST DAY: JUNE 13

To be said daily:

Unfailing Prayer to St. Anthony

O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity
for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess
miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever
ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this
thought, I implore you to obtain for me (request). The answer to my
prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of
Miracles. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full
of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet
Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude
of my heart will ever be yours.
Amen.

DAY 1 - PERSONAL GOOD HEALTH

O holy St. Anthony, with great compassion you looked after the needs
of others, especially the sick and the aged. I implore your heavenly
care to watch over me, protect me from all harm, and shield me from
injury and evil. Keep me safe from serious illness and disease,
especially (here mention your request) so that I may serve God
faithfully each day. Help me to bear life's burdens with trust and
confidence in God's loving plan for my life. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

DAY 2 - HEALING OF A LOVED ONE

O holy St. Anthony, God granted you the power to heal those afflicted
with every kind of sickness. Hear my plea for my loved ones (here
name) who are ill and in need of your heavenly assistance. Obtain
for them health in mind and body, and give them the strength to
overcome pain and suffering. Quickly and completely restore them to
the fullness of good health. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

DAY 3 - FAMILY HARMONY AND UNITY

O holy St. Anthony, God blessed you with a loving family to teach and
guide you, and to help you grow into being all that God wanted you to
be. I fervently ask for your heavenly intercession on behalf of my
own family. (Here mention your petition.) Fill our hearts with
mutual love, compassion, and understanding. Lead us to be forgiving
of each other's mistakes and failures, so that our family may reflect
God's presence in our homes and in our lives. Grant us family
harmony, unity, and peace. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

DAY 4 - RETURN TO THE CHURCH

O holy St. Anthony, your heart was filled with mercy for those who
had fallen away from their Catholic Faith. I place before you now my
deep concern for those dear to me (here mention names) who are away
from the Church and not receiving the Sacraments. Enlighten their
minds, touch their hearts, and lead them to true friendship with
Jesus Christ. Give me the wisdom and patience to be a good and
worthy example of faith to them. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

DAY 5 - FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES

O holy St. Anthony, you often expressed loving concern for the poor
and needy, and you worked miracles to relieve their
suffering. Please assist us when my loved ones or I experience
financial problems. At this time I especially place in your care
these financial worries (here mention) which are troubling to me or
to those I love. Teach us not to desire wealth and possessions, and
give us generous hearts to share what we have with those less fortunate. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

DAY 6 - PEACE OF MIND

O holy St. Anthony, your strong and deep faith in Jesus Christ
comforted your heart, especially during times of trial and distress
in your life. Help me to grow in faith, so that I may experience
peace of mind and heart in my present needs (here mention). Free me
from undue anxiety, needless worry, and burdensome fears. Grant me
sure confidence, unfailing trust, and daily serenity in the awareness
of God's loving mercy. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

DAY 7 - CHURCH VOCATIONS

O holy St. Anthony, you were an outstanding friar and a devoted
priest of God. The Lord filled your life with missionary enthusiasm
to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to foreign lands. Kindly look
upon the critical needs of our world today (here mention) and raise
up young men and women willing to courageously give their lives in
faithful service to God and to the Church. Help me to joyfully
practice my Catholic faith, so that I, too, may be a light to others,
and a genuine instrument of God's presence and peace. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

DAY 8 - CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN

O holy St. Anthony, you were greatly admired by others for your
childlike qualities of innocence, trust and goodness. I ask you now
to intercede for me before God for the children I entrust to your
heavenly care (here mention names). Keep them safe from danger and
evil. Protect them from illness, disease and harm. Guard them
against the negative influence of those who would lead them
astray. Help them grow in faith and wisdom, so they may live as
worthy daughters and sons of our Heavenly Father. May they daily
experience the tender care of our loving God, who first gave them
breath and life, and whose image they bear. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

DAY 9 - DECEASED LOVED ONES

O holy St. Anthony, as you were dying, you prayed aloud, "I see my
Lord!" You lived a brief 36 years here on earth, buy you have spent
your eternity as a constant worker of miracles, the patron saint of
those in greatest need. Graciously welcome my deceased loved ones
into eternal life, especially (here mention names). Lead them to the
heavenly throne of our Divine Savior, so they may receive the reward
of their labors and experience the fullness of life, love and joy in
God's presence forever. Amen.

Si quaeris

This prayer of praise, or responsorial, in honour of Saint Anthony
was composed by friar Giuliano da Spira. The responsorial is part of
the Officium rhythmicum S. Antonii, which dates back to 1233, two
years after Saint Anthony's death. It is sung at Saint Anthony's
Basilica and many other churches every Tuesday.

If then you ask for miracles,
Death, error, all calamities,
Leprosy and demons fly,
And health succeeds infirmities.

The sea obeys and fetters break,
And lifeless limbs you do restore;
While treasures lost are found again,
When young and old your aid implore.

All dangers vanish at your prayer,
And direst need does quickly flee;
Let those who know your power proclaim,
Let Paduans say: these are yours.

To Father, Son may glory be
And Holy Spirit, eternally.

Ecce crucem Domini

Popular tradition maintains that Saint Anthony gave a prayer to a
poor woman who sought help against evil temptations. Pope Sixtus V, a
Franciscan, had the prayer carved at the base of the obelisk, which
he erected in St. Peter's Square in Rome. Here is the original Latin:

Ecce Crucem Domini!
Fugite partes adversae!
Vicit Leo de tribu Juda,
Radix David! Alleluia!

Here is the English translation:

Behold the Cross of the Lord!
Be gone all evil powers!
The Lion of the tribe of Judah,
The root of David has conquered! Alleluia!

This short prayer has all the flavour of a small exorcism. We too can
use it - in Latin or in English - to help us overcome temptations.

Pray for us, blessed Anthony, Make us worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray

Lord God, may the votive commemoration of blessed Anthony, your
Confessor and Doctor, be a source of joy for your people. May they
always be strengthened with his spiritual assistance and deserve
eternal rewards. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
