(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be) Si quaeris This prayer of praise, or responsorial, in honour of Saint Anthony was composed by friar Giuliano da Spira. The responsorial is part of the Officium rhythmicum S. Antonii, which dates back to 1233, two years after Saint Anthony's death. It is sung at Saint Anthony's Basilica and many other churches every Tuesday. If then you ask for miracles, Death, error, all calamities, Leprosy and demons fly, And health succeeds infirmities. The sea obeys and fetters break, And lifeless limbs you do restore; While treasures lost are found again, When young and old your aid implore. All dangers vanish at your prayer, And direst need does quickly flee; Let those who know your power proclaim, Let Paduans say: these are yours. To Father, Son may glory be And Holy Spirit, eternally. Ecce crucem Domini Popular tradition maintains that Saint Anthony gave a prayer to a poor woman who sought help against evil temptations. Pope Sixtus V, a Franciscan, had the prayer carved at the base of the obelisk, which he erected in St. Peter's Square in Rome. Here is the original Latin: Ecce Crucem Domini! Fugite partes adversae! Vicit Leo de tribu Juda, Radix David! Alleluia! Here is the English translation: Behold the Cross of the Lord! Be gone all evil powers! The Lion of the tribe of Judah, The root of David has conquered! Alleluia! This short prayer has all the flavour of a small exorcism. We too can use it - in Latin or in English - to help us overcome temptations. Pray for us, blessed Anthony, Make us worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray Lord God, may the votive commemoration of blessed Anthony, your Confessor and Doctor, be a source of joy for your people. May they always be strengthened with his spiritual assistance and deserve eternal rewards. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
