I might never have noticed Lane if she hadn't had vacation pictures from San Jose, California. My first love was from the San Jose area. We'd met when I was a senior in high school and he was a corpsman at the Portsmouth, Va., Naval Hospital. We talked of getting married someday, but at 17 and 21 neither of us was really ready. We broke up shortly after he returned home. Over the next 25 years, I sometimes wondered what things would have been like if we had met a few years later. I still thought about him every so often. "I was in love with a guy from around San Jose once," I told Lane. "Lew Cabral. I used to write him in a town called Campbell." "I'm from Campbell," Lane exclaimed. "And I went to high school with Lew Cabral!" Hearing this filled me with memories. Lane's '57 Campbell High School yearbook was on my desk the next day, its shiny white pages in perfect condition. I found Lew's picture. Lane had started something I had to finish. Lew was listed in the San Jose directory, and I worked up the courage to call. He remembered me! We started writing letters again, and this time we married. I never saw Lane again after the day she brought in the yearbook. "Honey, do you remember going to school with anyone named Lane?" I asked Lew one afternoon. When he couldn't recall anyone with that name, I looked through his old yearbook. Lane wasn't listed anywhere, not even in the list of students who weren't present for photographs.
