How to Make a Novena to St. Anthony

The word "novena" derives from the Latin for "nine each" referring to
prayers over a nine-day period. The word is also loosely used to
refer to any consecutive span of prayer.

To make a novena to ask St. Anthony's intercession on your behalf,
simply offer prayers to him over a consecutive period, such as 9 or
13 Tuesdays. Praying before an image of St. Anthony may foster your
devotion, although it is not essential.

If possible, receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at some point
during this period. Also try to participate in Mass on each Tuesday
and receive Holy Communion, if you can. Your novena is meant to
deepen your devotion to Jesus.

Try to imitate the virtues of St. Anthony in some special way on each
Tuesday, for example, by reading from the Bible and performing some kindness.

Try to promise a gift to St. Anthony of "Bread for the Poor" in
thanks for favors received from God.

At the end of your novena to St. Anthony, entrust whatever intentions
you have to God's will. Remember that God, in His love, may have His
own way of answering your prayers.

Tuesday, St. Anthony's Day
God called St. Anthony to eternal life on June 13, 1231. The saint
had wanted to be laid to rest at home in Padua, but when the news
spread of his death, disputes arose over the possession of the
remains of this extraordinarily popular Franciscan, just as had
happened with St. Francis, himself.

The following Tuesday, Anthony's remains were finally borne in a
triumphal funeral procession to the friars' church in Padua. the day
saw a marvelous manifestation of favors granted to all who called on
the saint for his intercession.

As a result, Tuesday became particularly associated with St. Anthony.
Down through the centuries, pilgrims to his tomb have gathered there
on Tuesdays to pray for their needs.

Tradition claims that in the year 1617, Tuesday became securely
established as St. Anthony's Day by the saint himself. A noblewoman
who lived in Bologna in Italy had prayed before his altar for the
gift of a child after 22 years of marriage. That night, St. Anthony
appeared to her in a vision. He instructed her to visit his statue
in the church of the Friars Minor for nine consecutive Tuesdays and
promised her prayers would be heard. The woman faithfully did as
directed, and a child was born, but terribly deformed. Undaunted,
the mother carried the baby to church and placed it on the saint's
altar, and soon afterward found the child to be in perfect health.

The story of this miracle spread rapidly throughout Italy, and the
novena of Tuesdays in honor of St. Anthony became a favorite
devotion. It then traveled to other countries.

Not satisfied with nine Tuesdays, the faithful increased the number
to thirteen to commemorate the day on which the saint had died. The
Church has encouraged these special Tuesday prayers in honor of St. Anthony.
