The symptoms were discovered by Marcin Skaldaniec:

The actual cause turned out to be a property descriptor bug
(SimpleProperty.read/writeProperty is expected to resolve property owner
faults, but it didn't). This caused ObjectDetachOperation to produce empty
objects.
This is now fixed in CVS.
