We've just this week got Jasperreports and Cayenne working together in a really interesting way. We keep the Jasper XML files in the database and use Cayenne to fetch them, compile them on the fly and then invoke Jasper. By then using the $F{} notation and a special expression "subreport.invoiceline" the report can fetch further reports from the database as a subreport. We do a similar thing to fetch images from the database with an "image.logo" type expression.
The end result is that all the customisable reports and images can be managed in the database and edited by the user whenever they want. Pretty simple, but it works well.
