Since the weather decided to be quite beautiful today, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for a little walk around Sapsucker Woods with some friends. There was a COOPER'S HAWK that made a pass at the feeders but came away empty handed and flew off to one of the trees in the middle of the pond. There was a GREAT BLUE HERON near the observatory which could be seen from across the pond. On the west side of the pond there was a nice little flock of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS accompanied by a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, and further along the trail there was a mixed flock including BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, two HAIRY WOODPECKERS, MOURNING DOVES, a WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and a WHITE- THROATED SPARROW.

Back at Cornell there was a cooper's hawk putting on a nice little show. There was a bush filled with probably 50 house sparrows, and the cooper's dropped down to the ground and hopped all around the bush for a while as if trying to come up with the best plan of attack. Really an interesting hunting strategy, generally more hopping than flying (and it didn't seem to be working out too well unfortunately).

This is my first official bird post at Cornell, quite a momentous occasion.
