On one of several stops at Stewart Park during a slow taxi day today (28 Oct) I
got excited because I saw Chris Wood standing at a scope and Tim Lenz running
back to his car. But he was just getting his notebook for a routine eBird
stationary count, not a camera or cell phone about another unusual bird. The
more interesting birds they pointed out included a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS
swimming nearby and displaying to each other, 1 distant BRANT on the water off
East Shore and 7 more flying in low toward Treman Marine Park, and 4 DUNLIN on
the red lighthouse breakwater. They also saw a female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER
which I missed today but saw yesterday. They remarked that they did not find
the NORTHERN SHOVELERS of yesterday (when I saw 4) and as long ago as last
Saturday, but I saw 3 of them on a subsequent visit today. Also at Stewart
Park today were 2 male BUFFLEHEAD, about 30 AMERICAN COOT, 7 COMMON MERGANSERS
of which one appears to be a male which may soon get breeding plumage, and 3
male and 2 female WOOD DUCKS, plus large numbers of MALLARDS, CANADA GEESE,
RING-BILLED GULLS, HERRING GULLS, and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, and a few
GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
