36 people participated in the Montezuma Christmas Bird Count on Saturday,
December 19. 78 species and 48,817 individuals were counted. New high counts
were established for Trumpeter Swan, Red-tailed Hawk, Eastern Screech-Owl,
Short-eared Owl, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Eastern Bluebird, and Northern
Mockingbird. Two new species were added to the cumulative list – Common Loon
and Peregrine Falcon. The complete list is below. Thanks to the participants,
my co-compiler, Carol Stokes-Cawley, and her minions, for providing the chili,
the Montezuma Audubon Center for hosting, and Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands
Complex for covering participant fees.
