However, one caveat: track down each singer at this time of year (spring
migration).

You just don't know for certain unless the singer is seen. Habitat type is
also helpful. If you are in the middle of State Forest lands and hear tons
of incessant Red-eyed Vireo songs in the treetops, they probably are all
Red-eyed Vireos. The tricky ones are those which are singing from mixed
second growth habitat with lots of scrubby bushes and shorter deciduous
trees (i.e., power line cuts/edges, old orchards, etc.), or which are
singing from a suburban neighborhood...it can be very difficult to be 100%
certain of ID by song without a sighting.

Good birding!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Philadelphia Vireo

At 5:30 this morning, while lying in bed half-awake, I was surprised to
hear a PHILADELPHIA VIREO singing outside my window (first ever in our
yard). It's song was just as my son, Chris, described to me: like
Red-Eye, but softer, higher pitched (squeaky), and at a slower pace.
Perhaps it was a new overnight arrival that just happened to land near
my house. After this, I had a difficult time getting back to sleep.
