Subject: Montezuma area - 9/7*

Today, Tuesday, 9/7, Bill Gillette andI did some "scouting " of areas for
the Muckrace and followed up on some of the birds posted over the weekend in
the

Montezuma area.
If anybody who is subscribed to cayugabirds sees this, feel free to pass it

along to there (I am not a subscriber).
Between 9:10 and 9:30 AM at May's Point Pool, the imm Little Blue Heron was

out front of the observation area off to the right and wandering left. In the
middle of this time period, the Glossy Ibis (had good looks and high percentage

sure of Glossy ID) popped up, circled and landed not far out to the right.
After

studying it, we turned to talk with others present and on turning back it was
gone again.

A bit before 10, on stopping at the Montezuma Visitor's Center, we had 2
Peregrine Falcons, seen earlier by Dave Spier, who was still there.
On the the Towpath Road viewing sites. Essentially all of the birds seen
and

posted yesterday were still present. We caught up with most and heard of others

seeing the few we did not have. Earlier both the Red Knot and Ruff had been in
quite close; farther out but still findable when we were there. Up to 8
Red-necked Phalaropes. Lots of birds of the commoner species. Let's hope the
fronts passing in the next couple of days don't take too many out before the
weekend!!

We were NOT able to find any evidence that the CLOSED TO UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY

posting on the dike where most of the shorebirds can be seen most closelyhas
yet been waived by anyone with the authority to do so. In other parts of the
country birders have found themselves excluded from hotspots because some think

rules don't apply to them. Towpath Road is a private road. It would be sad to
drive up and find access denied to that whole area because of the actions of a
few.
