I made another run to Fairhaven State Park today after not finding Purple Sandpiper at the Irondequoit Bay outlet. The PURPLE SANDPIPER was feeding with a DUNLIN along the south side of the east/west running breakwall.
>From Fairhaven I drove to the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge area. The best birds were two SHORT EARED OWLS along VanDyne Spoor Road seen just before 3:00 PM. Also of note was a dark morph ROUGH LEGGED HAWK at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. Other stops today included the south end of Irondequoit Bay. I could find nothing unusual in the gulls and there were no shorebirds of any kind found on the mudflats. There was a single BELTED KINGFISHER here. At the Irondequoit Bay outlet the only bird of note was a HORNED GREBE in the channel. I made a stop at Sodus Bay thinking the channel or bay might hold some ducks given the rough conditions on the lake. This stop was nearly devoid of waterfowl. The only sightings of note were a RED THROATED LOON in the bay and 3 DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANTS (1 in the channel and 2 on the east/west breakwall).
