Subject: RE: [cayugabirds-l] RFI: last sighting of KING EIDER, Stewart Park, 5
Dec and other birds

Hi Dave and others,
My sighting was not the latest, but when we were watching he moved out to main
lake. I videoed him going past Red-lighthouse jetty. Later, I went to East
Shore Park to see he would be visible from there but in fact he was not. It was
very choppy so could have missed him among the waves easily.

When I went to Stewart Park Cascadilla Boat House at about 13.49 hr, he was
swimming somewhere nearby. So without getting out of the car, I took a shot
through my window glass. When he dived I got out of the car positioned myself
behind the car. When he dived next time again, I ran to take cover of
port-a-potty hoping not to disturb him. But when I looked ahead of me, three
people were watching him from much closer distance right out in the open! So he
was not afraid of humans!

I did get a short video clip and a few photos. When I was closest to him, he
started heading out of the creek and we watched him go past Red-lighthouse.

I also further proceeded to go up to Center Road to look for field birds.
Center Road was devoid of any kinds of bird. Then I decided head up to
Rafferty. Here I found 7 HORNED LARKS and two Red-tails. On the way back I
found 5 more Red-tails at various locations.

Here is a link to photos of Eider, not so very spectacular.

And a 1.20 minute clip of video.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] RFI: last sighting of KING EIDER, Stewart Park, 5 Dec

At least 12 people came to Stewart Park's Cascadilla Boathouse while I was
there today
and had excellent looks at the male KING EIDER in nearly full breeding plumage.
I understand that a number of other people showed up later and also had similar
great
looks at it. Stuart Krasnoff told me that he last saw it around 3:45 and it
had moved
out of Fall Creek into Cayuga Lake away from both the shore and the various
jetties
but still in view from Stewart Park. However Jerry Lazarczyk arrived around
4:30
knowing that info and missed it. If anyone has more details on when and where
the
King Eider was last seen today, please email me or post to the list. Thanks!

The KING EIDER was still there when I left at 12:45pm.
Great close views of a spectacular bird. No scope needed.
The feather shapes on the back and wings are incredible,
as are the complex patterns on the head. I hope it stays
long enough for everyone to have a look. It was close to
the Cascadilla Boathouse in Fall Creek diving for crayfish,
preening, and swimming mostly by itself but sometimes
with Mallards or a Common Merganser.

Also BUFFLEHEADS, COMMON GOLDENEYES, and
GADWALL on the lake and COMMON and HOODED
MERGANSERS on Cayuga Inlet.

It was truly odd to see this bird of cold arctic oceans with our familiar
Mallards and Domestic Ducks at Stewart Park.
