Here is a statement from Linda Ziemba, Wildllife Biologist at MNWR, concerning
water management at Montezuma this summer:

Draining the Main Pool in 2010 resulted in lush vegetative growth that will
continue to provide food and cover for wildlife this year. We intend to keep
water in this impoundment through 2011 to provide emergent marsh habitat for
migrating waterfowl and breeding marshbirds. We are experimenting with
techniques to continue restoring the Dry Marsh while keeping water in the Main
Pool for wildlife.

Tschache Pool has not been drained in a while and therefore largely consists of
open water, which is not ideal for many wildlife species. Weather permitting,
Tschache Pool will be drained this spring to provide habitat for northbound
shorebirds and to promote vegetative growth. If possible, the area will be
reflooded in the fall to provide high quality habitat for southbound waterfowl.
