Hope Batcheller and I did some dusk and night birding this evening (20 May
2011). Highlights were two VIRGINIA RAILS in Fidlers Pond on Rt. 13A (no
luck with bittern), at least seven AMERICAN WOODCOCK calling along Snyder
Road at the Ithaca Airport, a calling SORA on Nemi Road near the west end,
and three BARRED OWLS (in different directions) from the parking lot at the
end of Hammond Hill Road. We heard quite a few night flight calls from
Hammond Hill, including many warblers and three BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS (no
thrushes), but when we stopped at Mount Pleasant to listen a little while
later we heard almost nothing save a Spotted Sandpiper and a possible Least
Sandpiper.

I had a good flight in the very early morning yesterday (1:30AM or so) when
I stepped out to listen here in NE Ithaca, including 3 BLACK-BILLED and 4
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS, 3 GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES, many Swainson's Thrushes, a
few Wood Thrushes and Veeries, a handful of Bobolinks and Rose-breasted
Grosbeaks, and lots of warblers of various flavors.

Good birding!
