On Dec 10,2011, at 3:55 pm I was able to pick out a/the juvenile THAYER'S GULL on the red lighthouse breakwater. I had been watching from the lakeshore of Treman Marine Park for about an hour, and the sun had already dropped behind West Hill when some of the birds shuffled around and a small-for-Herring, evenly pale-for-juvenile, dark-billed, finely detailed, brown-primaried gull came into view. When it raised its wings, the underside of the primaries was very pale. The bird could have been there awhile, hidden, or it could have been among the steady trickle of arrivals which I could not check while scoping birds on the breakwater or on the water.
Other finds included at least 1 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT various places on the lake, the continuing 2 juvenile BRANT in the marina, a flock of about 22 NORTHERN PINTAIL out on the lake which flew I think south, a very high flock of about 50 SNOW GEESE flying southeast, and 2 TURKEY VULTURES over Cayuga Heights. Everything else was as has been seen lately off Stewart Park. I saw no grebes or loons, but did not particularly try to fight the chop, shimmer, and wind vibration to concentrate on open water.
Still present as of 745 after a brief peregrine falcon scare.
