There is a long tradition of recording when, where, and by whom each bird species is first observed each year within the Cayuga Lake Basin. I have kept this list for several years, but in 2012 it may be on the Cayuga Bird Club website, thanks to Paul Anderson. All the species found on the January 1 Ithaca Christmas Bird Count get listed first, but for birds first found in other parts of the Cayuga Lake Basin there is an opportunity for (limited) fame and glory. Starting January 1, please be sure to post your observations of birds you suspect we may not find on the Ithaca CBC, such as swans, a certain Snowy Owl, less common waterbirds, or anything rare, and maybe you'll be immortalized in this little sidebar of history. Don't fret if you aren't sure if your observation was within the Cayuga Lake Basin. If you can describe the location well enough or place it accurately on an eBird report, we can probably figure that out. Here's to a brand new year of birding!
