First of all, thanks to Chris and Jessie for getting the word out quickly about the Western Grebe. A wonderful sight!

After the first group of birders had left (with Dave Nutter, Ann Mitchell, Bill Baker, and Paul Anderson remaining) a group of 4 WHITE- WINGED SCOTERS flew up the lake and disappeared to the north.

I just now (11:00) spoke with Dave, who was with Ann at Ladoga. They spotted the broken-billed Common Loon. It has now been seen there for the past four or five years. I think it is remarkable that it has survived with such an apparent handicap, and that it returns to the same wintering spot with such regularity. That leaves me to hope that the Pacific Loon may again return to the Sheldrake area this winter.
