I did a walk around Mundy today. Highlights were 5 or 6 Golden Crowned Kinglets. They are absolutely adorable. They were moving from one hemlock to another and had to pass me on the way, they cared least about me. One of them simply passed me from a couple of inches away. There was also a very plump Blue -headed Vireo along with them. I feel I have seen very few of these birds this year. Near Kentucky spot, I ran into a juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. He/she was working on a maple samaras. He was picking up individual pairs of samara and throwing them in the air with force. I am not sure if during that time he ate the seeds by squeezing them out. He did that till all the fruits on that tip were gone. Then he moved to next. It was fun to watch him.
There was a migrating Monarch, if he makes it to Virginia in next two days he should be ok. If he is flying say 30 MPH he should have to fly five hours today and five hours tomorrow. I admired his goal. There was also a Clouded yellow Sulphur nectaring on one of the late Asters (or whatever they are called now). I also flushed a very cold female Autumn Meadowhawk dragonfly, which just moved a foot and landed on a sunny shrub. It was very pleasant afternoon out there.
