Susie & I were walking thru Hammond Hill SF early this morning. It was very
quiet- distant WINTER WREN, HERMIT THRUSH, etc. With no warning, a very
loud cacophony of sounds poured forth from a mass of spruces just off the
trail. We both stopped and said "What the h***"! I was listening hard for
clues to the sounds, but few were forthcoming. After what seemed like 5
minutes, the din started to diminish and we could make out various irate
raven calls. Then 2 adults flew away, but calls continued from a single
point, so we assume a nest of young is there. Then I remembered that
several years ago I had found a GREAT BLUE HERON NEST at this location.
Then we saw at least 4 of them flying out and circling. What we suppose is
that the ravens took one of several heron nests earlier this spring, the
herons taking the others when they arrived later. We have no idea what
caused the commotion; maybe one of the herons infringed on raven space, or
vice versa. It rather took our breath away.
