After an unsuccessful walk at the Lab looking for the BARRED OWL, I did
see two BROAD-WINGED HAWKS riding the developing thermals, I headed to Six
Mile Creek Preserve. Being late morning the parking lot was full of kids, dogs,
walkers, runners and stone pickers. I decided to go an alternate route by the
reservoir ponds and down to the big falls. I had my first of the season GRAY
CATBIRD. I thought I heard one in that area the other day, but it was so brief
I figured I heard something else over the sound of the wind. The CANADA GOOSE
pair and their five goslings were touring the river by the parking lot.

Down below the falls I had wonderful viewing of one LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH and heard another. A BEAVER was trying to hide from me by facing
the bank and scrunching up into a ball. I suppose when he gets done damming the
creek we will have a big new lake for waterfowl.

Filed away in the "great non-bird sightings" category was a RED FOX den
with two very cute youngsters hanging out and sunning themselves. Of course the
camera was safe in the car. They didn't seem bothered by my close presence,
probably because I didn't move. As I walked away one scurried into the den and
the other one stayed under the brush pretty well hidden. I hope I see them
again before they move out on their own.
