Leading a bunch of kids on a walk this morning, just south of the Podell
Boardwalk I heard the loud insistent "chick-brrrr"ing of a scarlet tanager, and
was surprised when the brilliant male bird came down low and close enough for
great naked-eye looks by most of the kids. It eventually moved a little deeper
into the woods where a large raptor took off and flew a short distance to land
on an obscured-view perch. Without binoculars I couldn't be sure what it was.

After the walk I took my bins south along the road and eventually heard a
couple of short hoots then saw a/the barred owl perched deep but in clear view
with its large eyes glaring at me. It soon took off and produced another couple
short hoots.

In the initial encounter I guess I failed to recognize the chick-brrr-ing as a
mobbing call (no other mobbers joined in), but it also seemed like the bird was
trying to lead us to the owl.
