This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of July 09 , 2012 Highlights: ----------- NORTHERN GOSHAWK SANDERLING STILT SANDPIPER SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL BLACK TERN YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO RED-HEADED WOODPECKER DICKCISSEL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 7/13: 3 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and 5 STILT SANDPIPERS were in with the Yellowlegs and Peep at Puddler’s Marsh 7/14: BLACK TERNS were seen at VanDyne Spoor Road, Tschache Pool and Knox-Marsellus Marsh. also seen at Knox-Marcellus was a GREAT EGRET and 3 TRUMPETER SWANS. Extralimital ------------ One of the DICKCISSELS was seen at the Seneca Meadow Wetland Preserve on 7/12 and 7/14. The preserve is on Black Brook Road north of Seneca Falls. Oneida County ------------ 7/9: A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was observed on Fish Creek between Camden and McConnellsville. 7/11: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found at Sylvan Beach. Jefferson County ------------ 7/11: 5 SANDERLING were seen at el Dorado Beach. Oswego County ------------ 7/11: 6 species of shorebirds including a STILT SANDPIPER were seen at Sandy Pond. Also found was 1 BLACK TERN.
