Yesterday afternoon before the snow, I noticed a large hawk coast down to
our field with lunch in mind. It sat on the grass for a bit, apparently
unsuccessful. From where I stood, it was behind a bush, so I did not get an
identifying look. Very soon, it took off and I got a fleeting look at the
black patches at the wrists. Clearly it was not a RedTail and I conclude
that it was a Rough-legged Hawk. It was a first for my yard, although
another was seen a while back in the woods around the corner from the field.
Today, there are eight inches of snow on the field so it doesn't appear to
be a hunting day for raptors, except maybe a Snowy Owl?
