Hi,

I am piggybacking a bit on Ken's Living Bird binocular review email to say that
if all this new binocular talk results in you upgrading your binos, I am
seeking the donation of a few pairs of nice binoculars for a community-run
ecotourism project in Taveuni, Fiji.

Chris and I (and baby Kieran) were in Lavena for ~2 weeks last month, and it
was the highlight of our time in Fiji. You can read reviews on Trip Advisor
for the

  and the
lodge<http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g297562-d1380358-Rev=%20iews-Lavena_Lodge-Taveuni_Island.html>
to get the idea. This is a place where many international birders come to
see the
Silktail<http://www.birdlife.org/datazone/speciesfactsheet.php?id=3D61=%2042>
, Orange
Dove<http://www.birdlife.org/datazone/speciesfactsheet.php?i=%20d=3D2702>
, and other sought after birds but they of course bring their own binoculars
& then leave. The guides in the village do not have binoculars (our guide
had been working with tourists for 17 years, and he did not even own shoes
let alone a camera or binoculars!). We spent enough time with a couple of
the guides to know that they would appreciate and care for binoculars if
they owned them (which is not always the case with donated materials).
Everything they know about the birds is via their time without binoculars
and the occasional time they have a chance to look through a tourist's
binos.

So I left motivated to find at least a couple pairs of binoculars to send them.
I'm getting my Nikon Monarchs repaired so if you have any binoculars to
donate, please contact me!

Oh, and if you are going to Fiji soon let me know so I can send you with the
binoculars to deliver them!

thanks much and happy birding!

Erica
