Our backyard, much of which is unmowed, is a haven for fireflies. We've had them for several weeks, and like Marty, I thought they were early this year, but I did not note the date.

On the subject of Bald Eagles, I've checked the nest in Ulysses a couple of times, including as recently as 30 June. I've only seen one youngster in branches above the nest, but for a change, one or two adults has also been perched in the nest tree. Maybe they are getting less shy, or maybe with only one youngster this year they are less busy.

Today afternoon while I was seeing some awesome insects like Green Darners and Black Saddlebags and a Ixodontia wasp carrying long grass blades (7 to 8 inches long) to some location under my office window, I watched an adult Bald Eagle circle around in front of my office window for a few minutes before heading off towards Lab of O I presume!

Finally, they are here. The Fireflies!  About 30 + flying in the front and back yard. Till yesterday I had not seen them, so I was wondering if changes in the plant compositions changed the habitat for them. But no, I think they just were late in emerging this year. I went out to switch on moth lights, and was glad to observe fourth of July fireworks in the yard!

I know Karen Edelstein posted seeing them a couple of weeks ago. Has anyone else seen them earlier this year?

Cheers

Meena
