For those people keeping track of the snowy owls: The snowy owl I saw today on Tamarack Lane outside of Homer is not the same snowy owl I saw Dec 31st on McCloy Road, Homer even though it is only a few miles away as the owl flies.
Comparing photos and binocular views of both birds, the bird on Tamarack Lane has more white on its head, and the body on the bird on McCloy Road was more heavily barred. My fingers got too cold to stay any longer. The owl seemed to favor the roofline of the 2nd house on the right, or one of the poles that is near route 90. Other people have seen it in the field. Tamarack Lane location: NOTE: Tamarack Lane is NOT on Google maps street view. It is a new housing development with about 5 houses. The houses can be seen on the satellite view but the road is still not labeled. Using the satellite view: route 90 west out of Homer you will pass Cosmos Hill Road and Sweeney Road on your left. Tamarack Lane is BEFORE Foster Road on the right. (both Tamarack and Foster come in on the right) On Google maps satellite view it makes it appear that you could take Creal Hill Road to get there. Don't believe it! A woman is going to post photos on the Homer newsletter website. (I have no information about that) Enjoy this winter. This was snowy owl #12 for me (with very little effort).
