Sorry for not getting the word out here sooner (it was texted to the RBA a
bit ago): Bob McGuire refound the drake EURASIAN WIGEON at the south end of
Cayuga Lake, this time at the SE corner, off East Shore Park and the
sailing club. It was acting in much the same manner as on Saturday,
swimming along the ice edge and occasionally clambering up onto the ice.

Also of note, in the Redhead and Canvasback flock I picked out what may
well be the same REDHEAD X SCAUP HYBRID that Livia and I found in the same
area in February. This bird looks very intermediate between a Redhead and a
scaup: overall gray body with black chest of a Redhead, reddish-purple
head, darker than a Redhead but not as black as a scaup (more of a matte
purple, rather than iridescent purple as scaup can show). I will post
photos of this bird when I get a chance--very cool. This makes me wonder if
the Redhead x Canvasback might turn up again too, as they were in the same
flock a month ago (as was the Tufted Duck, for that matter!)

Hawk-watching from the hill here at the Lab was productive earlier, with 3
GOLDEN EAGLES, 3 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, and a handful of Snow Geese.

And finally, a group of us went to look at the airport SHORT-EARED OWLS
last night around 7:30. Three appeared on cue, then flew up together and
disappeared high to the north. Migrating?? It will be interesting to see if
they are seen here again this season.
