On a brief foray around the arboretum this morning I heard a high pitched and rapid whistley twitter. When I looked up it was a male Red-winged Blackbird displaying to two females who were observing him rather disinterestedly. He had both wings raised straight up, like a sandpiper display. Both females flew away in spite of his imploring. I had never heard nor seen this before. I am continually adding new vocalizations of birds to my understanding, if not necessarily my memory.
A Brown Thrasher was singing in plain view at the top of a bare tree. And there were several, at least three, American Redstarts singing. Yellow Warblers, Pine Warbler, Warbling Vireo etc. As far as female Red-winged blackbirds, they have been in evidence at Sapsucker woods from April 19 but on the weekend of April 26 there were several and on the bird club trip on Saturday, there were many in full on vocalization, being -chased mode.
