This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of June 16, 2014 Highlights: ----------- COMMON LOON SANDHILL CRANE BLACK TERN RED-HEADED WOODPECKER ACADIAN FLYCATCHER PROTHONOTARY WARBLER CERULEAN WARBLER ORCHARD ORIOLE CLAY-COLORED SPARROW HENSLOW’S SPARROW Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 6/18: A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was again seen in the wooded area on Armitage Road. 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue in the dead trees on Mays Point Road. 6/19: A SANDHILL CRANE was seen on VanDyne Spoor Road. 6/20: A SANDHILL CRANE was seen in Snox-Marsellus Marsh. 6/22: Both PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS were found in the wooded area on Armitage Road. A CERULEAN WARBLER was heard also. Onondaga County ------------ 6/21: A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continues to be found at GreenLakes State Park. 6/22: A CERULEAN WARBLER continues to sing in Whiskey Hollow. An ACADIAN FLYCATCHER was discovered on a nest in Whiskey Hollow. An ORCHARD ORIOLE was again seen at Green Lakes State Park. Oswego County ------------ 6/17: A BLACK TERN was seen at Sandy Pond. 6/21: A rather out of place COMMON LOON was seen flying in the Constantia area. Madison County ------------ 6/19: An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen on Ditchbank Road.
