This morning, before it was seen at the feeder, the male Red-bellied Woodpecker that frequents our suet was eating a frozen brown apple still hanging on a tree. It was drilling into it and extracting "bites".
Fruit is frequently mentioned as part of their diet, but I hadn't before seen one eating apples, especially not frozen brown ones. Carbs a little limited at this time of year?!
