This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of December 29, 2014 Highlights:----------- RED-THROATED LOONRED-NECKED GREBECANVASBACKTUNDRA SWANICELAND GULLGLAUCOUS GULLSHORT-EARED OWLNORTHERN SHRIKELAPLAND LONGSPURCHIPPING SPARROWEVENING GROSBEAKCOMMON REDPOLL
Montezuma National Wildlife Complex (MNWC) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)------------ 1/11: 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS were found at the Sandhill Crane Unit. Onondaga County------------ 1/5: A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen on Onondaga Lake at the West Shore Trail. A CHIPPING SPARROW continues to try to overwinter in Skaneateles. 1/6: 2 COMMON REDPOLLS continue at Beaver Lake Nature Center. 1/10: 5 TUNDRA SWANS and 5 CANVASBACKS were in with other waterfowl at the Marina in Liverpool. A FISH CROW was present also. 1/11: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along Rt. 690 in Baldwinsville.An ICELAND GULL and 4 CANVASBACKS were seen along the Northeast Trail on the Seneca River in Baldwinsville. An ICELAND and a GLAUCOUS GULL were both spotted at the Inner Harbor. A probable ROSE-BREASTED but possible BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK was at a feeder in Syracuse. Oneida County------------ 1/6: A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was found on North Gage Road north of Utica. 1/11: 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS continue on Miller Road and Rt.31 near Durhamville. Herkimer county------------ 1/8: 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS continue on Cronkhite Road south of St. Johnsville. Madison County------------ 1/10: 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were in with Snow Buntings and Horned Larks on East Road near New Woodstock. These birds were seen the next two days also. At the feeders on Carpenter Road between 3 and 7 EVENING GROSBEAKS continue to be seen. These birds were also seen on the 11th. and 12th. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS seem to be prevelent in this county recently. As many darks as lights are being seen.
