Many of you know that for several years I have continued the decades-long tradition of keeping a list of first annual observations of species of birds in the Cayuga Lake Basin. The list can be seen on the Cayuga Bird Club web site Resources page here: http://www.cayugabirdclub.org/Resources/cayuga-lake-basin-first-records The list has criteria, of course, one of which is whether the bird was within the Cayuga Lake Basin, which was defined by a couple of botanists in the mid-1920s to include not just lands which drain into Cayuga Lake but also lands which drain northward or southward into a certain portion of the Seneca River and Erie Canal north of Cayuga Lake.
An eBird report (below) has come in of a PINE WARBLER at a feeder along NYS-89 in the Wayne County Town of Butler. Pine Warblers occasionally do that in winter, so I'm not questioning the report. The problem here is that I can't tell from my maps whether the site in question drains to the north via Wolcott Creek directly into Lake Ontario and is out of the basin, or whether it drains to the south via Butler Creek, Crusoe Lake, and Crusoe Creek into the Seneca River and is in the basin. Furthermore the eBird report does not give the observer's name, another item which traditionally gets put on the annual First Basin Records list. If anyone knows this person or location, or can say which way it drains, please let me know. Thanks. --Dave Nutter PS - The 2015 list-to-date was also published in the most recent Cayuga Bird Club newsletter but without the dates, locations, or observers. I'd like to clarify the caption about the birds being in the order they were found. When multiple species are added for the same day, I add them in checklist order. Thus the first 102 species, which were all found on January 1st, make it look a lot like a checklist and don't reflect the order they were found that day. After the last species on the checklist found on New Year's Day, House Sparrow, the entries are more reflective of the order species were found on subsequent days. > Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus) (1) > - Reported Feb 13, 2015 07:30 by Anonymous eBirder > - My house, Wayne, New York > - Map: > http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=43.156379,-76.7735124&ll=43.156379,-76.7735124 > - Checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S21808682 -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
