Hi Cayugabirders, I posted here a week or so ago about Avicaching (http://ebird.org/content/ebird/avicaching/), a new eBird project that is only taking place in Tompkins and Cortland Counties. I wanted to give a brief update on the first week, and perhaps encourage some more people to participate in the upcoming weeks and months! In addition, the rankings for the first week are now up on the site, and will be updated on Fridays going forward!
Over 60 species were seen at Avicaches in this first week, including Golden Eagle (http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S22641875), Cackling Goose (http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S22570266), and a White-winged Crossbill (http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S22642558)! It just goes to show that you never know what you’ll encounter when you head out birding, and also that locations off of the beaten path can offer exciting birds as well as new places to explore. There are still almost two months left of Avicaching, and I hope that you’ll go out there and find some great birds, while simultaneously contributing to science and increasing your chances of winning free Zeiss binoculars!
