Hi all, I spent some time at the Great Horned Owl nest on the Newman Golf Course this morning. For the first time, there was NO adult around, so I guess the parents now trust their owlets will be OK "home alone". The larger of the two nestlings stood and preened for a while, but no wing flapping yet. It was interesting, too, to see it gular-fluttering when the sun came out. Trying to cool off.
On an amusing note, a Canada Goose is nesting in the top of a broken tree stump (about 20 feet high) on the back side of the lagoon (maybe has been mentioned here before?). Such opportunistic birds. And finally, my main reason for being in Stewart Pk was to check on the status of Common Merganser nesting. Some were still swimming around in pairs, so maybe the females are not yet on eggs. One of my photo goals this spring/summer is Common Mergansers with ducklings (merglings?). So if anyone sees merg families locally, please let me know. Thanks!
