An unusual “predator-prey interaction” just now: an adult Sharp-shinned Hawk
repeatedly chasing a male Pileated Woodpecker. The woodpecker was clearly
zigging and zagging out of its way, but landed on a tree and began foraging as
soon as it could…not so impressed? The hawk landed nearby and repeated the
attack after a short bit.

The light is terrible for distant detection of hawk coloration, but am 95% sure
the hawk was adult and the pileated certainly is. The Pileated is also on
territory, but I usually see a young Cooper’s Hawk hunting through here, not
Sharp-Shinned.

All Hile School Road, Freeville, just out of Basin.
