There was lots of activity at my downtown backyard feeders this am
including a pair of hairy woodpeckers, so I looked more closely than
usual and saw a large white puffy tuft at the rear of the female's beak.
Sibley calls this out for the female downy - "conspicuous tuft of nasal
bristles" but the drawing for the hairy looks small and flat in that
region. Does anyone know if the bristles have an erectile function?
