Yesterday while strolling through Lime Hollow, I was drawn off-trail by some
complaining chickadees; when I arrived in their midst, all I saw was scattered
foraging, with occasional "chickadee-dee-dee" calls slowly decreasing in
frequency. Figuring the threat, if any, had passed, I hung out a bit trying to
photograph the chickadees foraging in close. Presently, I took one step,
whereupon a hitherto unseen barred owl took off from a pine tree towards which
I'd stepped, and the chickadees re-elevated their alert call frequency. The
bird landed nearby and allowed a few nice shots before taking off for good.

This morning, while hiking near the upper dam of Six-Mile Creek, I heard some
complaints first from blue jays, then from a small mob of crows who flew in to
complain vehemently before leaving. Through the thick pine foliage, the only
landmark I could note was a bough at the edge of the grove on which the loudest
crow had landed briefly. When I approached to scan that tree, I eventually saw
this Great Horned Owl:
