Last night I went out to Sapsucker Woods to look for the Olive-sided Flycatcher, with no success. On the south side of the trail I suddenly heard two soft hoots and looked up to see a Barred Owl looking down at me (around 7:30 pm). I took a few iphone images of its silhouette (it wasn't dark yet, so I could see the bird clearly, but the iphone couldn't). It silently watched me. Then as I departed, I heard another Barred Owl calling from a bit further off. I always love the surprise of coming upon one of these owls!
