There is a significant restoration effort in Jamaica bay especially in the Refuge. There is also a volunteer effort to attempt preservation of the few small islands still above water. I was birding there about 4 weeks ago. Quite a drastic change,loss of shoreline etc since I was a ranger there in the 70s
