A live 1-inch-diameter branch was cut off, leaving a 3-foot length when my screen pergola was built onto the side of my cottage. It is 4 feet above a bird feeder frequented by chickadees, which is hanging on a lower branch.
I kept noticing a wet spot on the ground near base of tree, then finally saw the moisture dripping from this cut-off branch & hitting the ground. Yesterday, while sitting inside the pergola, I saw a chickadee repeatedly sitting on the end of that branch, drinking sap as it flowed out ! Plus, I thought - the river birch is watering itself since the sap flow is quite constant.
